Consistency is the key to success. It leads to habit building. Habits forms actions that we take every day. And yes, action leads to Success.
“It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives. It’s what we do consistently.” – Anthony Robbins
Success is a journey. You’ve to be consistently always be successful and that is when you are really outstanding. Otherwise you will be remembered for your last failure. Everyone has had some or the other types of failures in life. The more time you take to sort of mourn it, you’re wasting that much of time. I feel strongly about getting up and running and compensate for your failures instead of crying.
Remember, you just have to perk up,
Pick yourself up,
Dust yourself off and think- What can I do? Because there is always a solution.
Again, success is not a destination. It is a journey. In order to be successful, one has to be consistent enough to be successful every day in spite of having failures.
Now, how can I be Consistent? Most of us struggle with being more consistent in some part of our lives and it’s really worth working on because the rewards of being consistent are huge.
So that being said, here are my 5 tips to help you be more consistently consistent in life.
- Plan your work & schedule it- I always make a to- do list, a calendar system, a strategic development plan, set realistic deadlines, make a wish list, etc. “Don’t prioritize your schedule, schedule your priorities.” – Steven Covey So, this subtle distinction is so important. When you are trying to make something consistent in your life, you want to really build your whole life around it rather than trying to fit it in. The reason I am able to do some good fundraising consistently is that I schedule it and I build the entire year around it. So, everybody who works with me, we have these dates for the year, they are sacred, they’re non-negotiable and this is going to happen come hell or high water.
- Pick your Battle- Now, notice, I didn’t say battles. I said battle. So, I want you to pick one thing and just stick with that. The reason why is that we human beings have limited capacity when it comes to willpower and discipline. So, pick one thing and once you make that a habit and you win that battle, then you can add on something else.
- Ignore your feelings- Now, this is probably the only time you’re going to ever hear me say this, but when it comes to developing consistency it’s pretty darn important to ignore the voice in your head that says, “I don’t feel like it.”
- Value Progress over Perfection- Perfection is based on an external standard – an impossible to achieve one I might add. Excellence is about striving to be the best you can possibly be. The standard is one set by yourself. The goal is to be YOUR best self, as opposed to chasing someone else’s idea of what you should be. One way to do this day-to-day is to value progress over perfection. If you are developing a skill to a level of excellence, then focus each day on making progress in that direction. Progress can take the form of improvement from one day versus the next. This is useful. If you keep improving every day, you keep getting better.
- Learn to say NO– Learning to say NO is an essential part of being consistent. It’s very hard for a Yes-Man/Woman to be consistent at something because they are always occupied by things that are not necessary. Prioritize and don’t let any distractions drag you away from your priority tasks. If you made a commitment to a certain thing, keep it high on your priority list and say No to anything that might get in the way. Don’t make promises you can’t keep. Whether it be making promises to self or to other people.
